Overview

Nestled along the Mediterranean coastline, Alexandria beckons with its rich tapestry of history, culture, and architectural marvels. A mere two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cairo, this Alexandria day tour promises an immersive journey into the heart of Egypt’s second-largest city, where ancient wonders and modern charm seamlessly coexist.

As dawn breaks over Cairo, the day begins with anticipation as travelers embark on a comfortable journey to Alexandria. The road unfolds, revealing a diverse landscape that transitions from the bustling urbanity of Cairo to the serene vistas of the Mediterranean coast. As the cityscape gives way to coastal panoramas, the air is infused with the scent of sea salt, setting the stage for a day of exploration.

The first stop on this captivating journey is the Qaitbay Citadel, a formidable fortress that stands proudly on the shores of the Mediterranean. Originally constructed in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitbay, the citadel served as a defensive bastion against potential invaders. Today, its well-preserved architecture offers a glimpse into the military prowess of the Mamluk dynasty. Visitors can stroll along the ramparts, enjoying panoramic views of the sea, and explore the inner chambers that once housed soldiers and weaponry.

Following the citadel, the tour ventures into the heart of Alexandria, arriving at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. This underground necropolis is a testament to the city’s multicultural past, blending elements of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian artistry. Descending into the depths of the catacombs, visitors are transported back in time, marveling at intricate carvings, statues, and chambers that served as the final resting place for countless individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The tour then meanders through Alexandria’s vibrant streets, where a blend of modernity and antiquity creates a unique atmosphere. Corniche, a scenic coastal road, beckons with its panoramic views and breezy charm. Strolling along this picturesque promenade, visitors can witness the city’s dynamic energy while taking in the invigorating sea breeze.

No visit to Alexandria would be complete without paying homage to the legendary Alexandria Library, a modern architectural masterpiece that pays homage to its ancient predecessor, the Great Library of Alexandria. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina stands as a symbol of cultural revival, housing millions of books, manuscripts, and artifacts. Visitors can explore the library’s expansive reading halls, attend cultural events, and immerse themselves in the wealth of knowledge encapsulated within its walls.

As the day unfolds, the tour takes a contemplative turn toward Pompey’s Pillar and the Serapeum of Alexandria. Pompey’s Pillar, a towering monolith hewn from red granite, stands as a solitary sentinel in the remnants of the Serapeum. This ancient sanctuary once housed the legendary Serapis, a deity that embodied the fusion of Egyptian and Hellenistic religious traditions.

The day draws to a close with a visit to the Montaza Palace, a sprawling royal complex surrounded by lush gardens and overlooking the Mediterranean. Originally built as a summer residence for the royal family, Montaza Palace enchants with its architectural elegance and historical significance. Visitors can wander through the palace grounds, marveling at the blend of Islamic and Florentine styles, and relishing the serenity of the seaside gardens.

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Alexandria, travelers return to Cairo with a heart full of memories and a newfound appreciation for the city’s multifaceted allure. The Alexandria day tour is not just a journey through history; it’s an odyssey that bridges the ancient and the contemporary, inviting visitors to witness the timeless beauty of Egypt’s Mediterranean gem.

This was not our first time going to here. It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
